I’ve spent the weekend packing boxes and boxes and boxes of books:) The hubster and I are getting ready to move and there are towers of brown boxes in my living room:) And while its a tossup who has more books – hubby or I – I think I’m the clear winner by virtue of collecting books for all interests. And I got plenty of interests:)
Romance Books – Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb dominates:) There’s a good smattering of Linda Howard, Johanna Lindsay and JR Ward (thought I started getting those in Ebook format – Lover Avenged was like a brick! Glad I got that on my Kindle lol)
Writing Books – Looks like I went from “plotting” to “character” -… I still have a hard time getting through a lot of the books because I tend to buy them when stuck on a plot point and forget all about them when said plot point is resolved… James N Frey seems to be a consistent author on my shelves – he’s a damn good writing teacher
(hehe – couldn’t help myself there)
Art Books – lots of drawing and painting and “happy little tree Bob Rossisms”. Plus a smattering of those “paint in a book” kits – those are always fun… I should get back into drawing… Someday.
Jazz books – A couple Bill Evans books which I can’t read (I have a hard time reading jazz rhythms) and a couple of Oscar Peterson books (with a CDs yay!). Plus a big stack of photocopied Star Wars soundtrack for the piano… Hubster wouldn’t let me recycle it:)
Hubster’s shelves are actually organized by theme/author – he’s got Robert Jordan on one shelve (HUGE books with neat covers!), a whole bunch of Star Trek TNG books (We once bet that he doesn’t have Q In Law in his collection and he took great pride in unearthing it in 10 seconds flat), Dresden books, and a smattering of various other Urban Fantasy books.
I gotta say – I love my Kindle, but there’s a certain gluttonous pride of ownership in having a diverse library of books:)
How do you guys keep your book collection organized?

Hahahaha, Fiona! I have to agree with you on all counts. I love my Kindle too, but there’s something just so… pretty… about a shelf full of books.
My books are *cough* organized (read: a mess of books shoved everywhere for the most part) by romance and ‘not romance’. 99.9% of the time, when someone wants to borrow something from me they either say, “Romance!” Or, sometimes, “Anything BUT romance!” LOL
Oh, and have you READ Q in Law? One of the funniest books. Ever. What was Q thinking?
Book collection organized? At my house that’s a contradiction in terms LOL. They are on my bedside table, on my desk, on my side table and even on bookshelves. My BIL always bitched about helping me move becAuse of my bookS. He wanted me to start collecting feathers. I told him a ton of feathers weighs the same as a ton of books but there’d be more boxes. I want to get an ereader eventually but I’ll still like holding the books in my hand.
Hi Aymee! Yep – I did read Q In Law – it was hilarious!!! I love how Lwaxana kicked his ass from one end of the Enterprise to the other:)
And LOL – I’m so with out about “Romance or Anything But Romance” – I get the same from my friends:)
LOL MAry G – FEATHERS???? HA! And its true – you’d have a lot more boxes that way:) Plus they get everywhere:) Oh man, you just reminded me, I got more books on the shelf under my nightstand….
I admit to the gluttonous pride of book ownership too Fi. I have more books than anyone in my family and can’t seem to quit buying them. Then on top of that, I have a ton of ebooks as well. But I love my books so I empathize with you totally! Hope your move goes well and you have no troubles at all.
Keep it organized? Er, um, you see . . . Well, the classics we save are organized in the family room alphabetically by author. Those in the guest room are by topics we think a guest might enjoy–short stories, comics, etc. In my office, I have research books and keeper hardbacks in the shelves. In the closet shelves and a bookcase I’ve wedged in there are my keeper paperbacks. I do reread favorites, but I’m thinning these keepers out to ones I’ve actually reread in the past five years. My husband’s office has books organized by type and he keeps those shelves neat for the most part. Those in our bedroom are organized in the bookcases, but there’s a huge overflow stacked on the cabinets under the bookshelves and on our night stands. All in all, it looks pretty messy. Our TBR stacks are terrible. Still, my husband complains that “there’s nothing to read.” LOL
